Derek James May
Trial & Appeal Lawyer

A skilled and tenacious litigator. Derek has nearly fifteen years of court experience. Since joining the Sisett Team, Derek has added a new dimension and capacity in matters of appeal and administrative tribunal advocacy issues, including CPP appeals and recovery of wrongfully denied disability insurance benefits.

He brings a clear focus and strong voice in seeking the best legal recovery available for those subjected to insult and injury.

While his present focus is on personal injury recovery, his legal expertise also includes extensive knowledge of labour and employment law, human rights law and WCB issues related to his practice.

Aside from his experience in the courtroom, Derek has conducted dozens of successful mediations, empowering clients in achieving fair negotiated settlements.

Derek says: “Only a personal injury lawyer can give the help needed to obtain full recovery from the physical, emotional & financial harm that results from significant trauma caused by another. We ensure that our clients obtain maximum benefit from the medical, insurance and legal systems in putting lives back together after trauma; or in coping with permanent dysfunction when doctors can’t restore our clients to the physical and emotional health they had the day before the injury event. We act only in our clients’ best interest, and we do it without pay until we get results. Only a personal injury lawyer can give this kind of help -- when a life has been ruined or damaged, and the only “currency” one can offer is a tremendous need for help. It is my privilege to help others in this way.”

Each client is treated with compassion, and aside from the legal help, many clients have commented on how Derek’s accessible wisdom augments the help provided by doctors and other care providers in learning to adjust to the unwelcome changes forced upon an accident victim. He still blushes when reminded of the client who described him as an “angel” when her case was concluded successfully.

When he’s not working on behalf of clients, Derek spends time with his son, keeping his trusty old orange VW Camper roadworthy, learning piano, and enjoying the beauty of our province … particularly with a fishing rod in hand.
